About the Role
At Aquila Medical Services, Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs) are the critical first point of contact in coordinating emergency response efforts. EMDs receive and prioritize incoming calls for medical assistance, gather essential information, dispatch appropriate resources, and provide pre-arrival instructions using approved emergency medical protocols. With a calm demeanor, clear communication, and strong decision-making skills, our dispatchers play a vital role in ensuring rapid, accurate, and effective response to every call for help.
Requirements
Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) – Job Requirements
Education & Certification:
High school diploma or GED required.
Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification (NAED or equivalent) or willingness to obtain.
CPR certification (American Heart Association or equivalent) or willingness to obtain.
Additional certifications in Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatch or Emergency Telecommunicator preferred.
Experience:
Prior experience in 911 dispatching, EMS, fire, law enforcement, or related fields is preferred.
Experience in high-stress, fast-paced environments is a plus.
Strong customer service, call center, or administrative background is beneficial.
Skills & Competencies:
Ability to quickly assess emergency situations and determine appropriate response levels.
Strong multitasking and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations.
Proficiency in computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems and radio communication.
Excellent verbal communication and ability to provide clear pre-arrival medical instructions to callers.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and record-keeping.
Ability to remain calm, professional, and compassionate while handling life-threatening situations.
Responsibilities:
Answer emergency and non-emergency calls and assess the nature of the medical situation.
Dispatch EMS personnel to appropriate locations based on call details.
Provide pre-arrival instructions, including CPR, airway management, and first aid, when necessary.
Monitor and coordinate ambulance movements to optimize response times.
Communicate effectively with first responders, hospitals, and law enforcement.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of calls and dispatch activities.
Follow all local, state, and federal protocols for emergency dispatching.
Other Requirements:
Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Strong typing and computer skills for efficient data entry.
Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
